At least one soldier was killed in the Papuan Highlands on Saturday during a clash with a rebel group holding a New Zealand national hostage, as the Indonesian Military (TNI) promised to “thoroughly evaluate” its rescue mission for the abducted pilot amid rising tensions in the region.
Jokowi said that military officials were carefully weighing their options on how to secure the release of Mehrtens, more than a month after the New Zealander was abducted shortly after landing at an airstrip in Nduga, Papua Highlands.
The Indonesian Military (TNI) has said it is ready to launch a strike against the West Papuan rebel group holding a New Zealand national hostage but will wait for the command from the government, as negotiations are ongoing.
