In the case of the Commuter Line pricing system, the subsidy scheme is not only to serve the public good, but also to amplify the positive externalities of using public transportation, including less air pollution and less traffic congestion.
The plan, which appears in the draft state budget for 2025, would require riders to submit their personal information, including their identity card numbers (NIK), to purchase travel cards for the Commuter Line. Operators would then impose different prices based on the passenger’s income.
Miktrotrans drivers get a salary “far below what is decent”, one protesting driver said. Each driver is required to meet a daily target of 100 kilometers of travel to receive the full daily wage of Rp 150,000 (US$9.28), which still puts them below Jakarta's minimum monthly wage.
