View all search resultsLaw and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly has defended the move to grant sentence reductions to a number of convicted terrorists, saying the decision was made after a thorough review that found the convicts had repented for their wrongdoings while serving time.
The Law and Human Rights Ministry has cut the sentences of 4,902 inmates across Central Java by 15 days to two months as part of the Idul Fitri remission policy for Muslim prisoners who display good behavior, said Bambang Sumardiono, the head of the ministry's Central Java office.
The government granted sentence reductions to 128 corruption convicts on Independence Day amid a controversial plan by the Justice and Human Rights Ministry to revise a 2012 government regulation to facilitate graft convicts in obtaining remissions.
The Law and Human Rights Ministry’s Central Java correctional institutions division head, Moelyanto, has said 3,948 inmates currently serving sentences in prisons across the province will receive remissions for Idul Fitri.
