View all search resultsThe government’s plan to fund schoolchildren’s access to the internet in support of online-based learning has spotlighted the social gaps that children living in poverty and in remote areas must face, experts have said.
"A lot of teachers still come to school even though they conduct online teaching. Prior to school reopening they got tested and many came back positive," he said on Thursday during a hearing with House of Representatives Commission X, which oversees education.
Deciding whether to open schools for in-person classes during a pandemic is a complex decision. Children often learn better in school, where they have direct contact with expert teachers and the social-emotional learning that comes from being around other children. But they also risk spreading the disease to their teachers and one another’s families without even being aware they have it.
Indonesia’s pediatricians have raised concerns over the government’s plan to allow more schools to reopen, given that the share of children among COVID-19 fatalities is higher in Indonesia than in other countries.
