View all search resultsAs of Friday, nearly 300 reports of vehicle breakdowns potentially connected to Pertalite had been recorded across at least seven regencies and cities in East Java, 99 percent of which involved motorcycles.
Since last week, reports have been circulating both online and offline from drivers in East Java complaining that their vehicles stalled or broke down after refueling with Pertalite. Many users also noted a stronger, alcohol-like odor coming from the fuel.
The government has stated that the introduction of cleaner – and costlier – fuel later this year will not necessitate price hikes or put further strain on the state budget. Instead, the rollout will be financed by preventing wealthier consumers from purchasing subsidized fuel.
The discourse on limiting the use of subsidized fuel brands Pertalite gasoline and Solar diesel has been a long-running debate under President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration. This time the government plans the limitation of Pertalite to take place on Oct. 1, 2024. President Jokowi’s stance has been indecisive regarding this matter, confusing the public once again.
The government and House of Representatives Budget Committee have slashed planned energy subsidies for next year by Rp 1.12 trillion (US$72.26 million), or 0.54 percent of the allocation proposed in the 2025 draft state budget (RAPBN), because of the rupiah’s appreciation.
Ministers from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s administration have brought the topic of the subsidized fuel, Pertalite, back into the spotlight. The plan is to reduce the consumption of the government subsidized fuel beginning August, coinciding with Indonesia’s Independence Day. However, differing statements from high-ranking officials have left the public puzzled, as the government has yet to reach a consensus on curtailing the country’s fuel subsidies.
