Environment Minister Hanif Faisol Nurofiq claimed the government would push for tangible efforts to curb plastic pollution in the country despite the lack of a legally-binding global treaty on plastic waste, after negotiations to produce one in Geneva faltered.
The latest draft for the global plastic pollution treaty shown on Wednesday did not display ‘strong ambition’ to cut the polymer production that is believed would be effective in reducing the waste generated each year, environmentalists said.
The Jakarta Environment Agency started testing the refused-derived fuel (RDF) plant in Rorotan, North Jakarta ahead of its reopening in September, after the site was closed following complaints from local residents about thick and smelly smoke.
Bali has been grappling with a growing waste crisis in recent years, with unmanaged garbage frequently contributing to environmental problems such as flooding, including in popular tourist areas.
In April, Bali Governor I Wayan Koster issued a circular banning the use of plastic bags, cups, straws and styrofoam in businesses, government offices, schools, hotels, restaurants, markets and places of worship, as part of broader efforts to tackle the island’s growing waste problem.
