The Environment Ministry announced on Wednesday that authorities had identified two types of chemical pesticides, namely cypermethrin and profenofos, which had contaminated a 22.5-kilometer section of the Cisadane River and its tributary the Jaletreng River.
Ternala explained that the bottom of Lake Toba is heavily polluted by leftover fish feed from floating fish farms. This waste has led to an accumulation of organic matter, which decomposes anaerobically without oxygen at the lakebed, releasing toxic compounds that can harm aquatic life.
The floating garbage and trash on the bottom of the Citarum River in West Java, often dubbed as the most polluted river in the world, as well as other bodies of water across Indonesia, comes from the mishandling and mismanagement of waste, experts have highlighted.
Jakartans — especially those living in areas unreached by the city’s pipe network — are still struggling to access clean potable water as scientists predict that climate change will disrupt water balance and a harsher El Niño can potentially spell problems for the city’s water resources.
