East Java unveils 367 tourism agendas for 2019

As a destination with numerous attractions to entice visitors, East Java recently launched “Kalender Wisata 2019” (Tourism Calendar 2019).

s a destination with numerous attractions to entice visitors, East Java recently launched “Kalender Wisata 2019” (Tourism Calendar 2019). Kompas.com reported that the launch took place at the Graha Wisata building in Surabaya, East Java, last Tuesday.

It was officiated by the head of the East Java Culture and Tourism Office, Sinarto. Tourism practitioners from around East Java also attended the event.

East Java’s tourism calendar for 2019 includes 367 cultural and leisure activities held in 38 regencies/cities in East Java during the year.

Of the 367 activities, seven form part of the National Tourism Calendar that was drawn up by the Tourism Ministry’s curatorial team. The seven leisure activities are the Majapahit International Travel Fair (May 2 to 5 in Surabaya), Yadnya Kasada and Eksotika Bromo (July 13 to 17 in the Mount Bromo area), Jember Fashion Carnival (July 30 to Aug. 4 at Jember city square), Malang Flower Festival (Sept. 15 in Malang), International Tour de Banyuwangi Ijen (Sept. 23 to 26 in the Mount Ijen-Banyuwangi area), Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival (July 28 at Blambangan Park, Banyuwangi) and Gandrung Sewu Festival (Oct. 12 on Boom Beach, Banyuwangi).

Sinarto told kompas.com that East Java had diverse attractions to entice tourists such as nature, culture and man-made structures. The province is also a destination that offers sporting events, carnivals, traditional ceremonies, art and cultural performances, religious rituals, exhibitions and culinary attractions.

“East Java is home to Mt. Bromo, Ijen crater, Klayar Beach in Pacitan regency, Tumpak Sewu waterfall in Lumajang regency, Tiga Warna (tricolor) Beach in Malang and Gili Labak Island in Sumenep regency,” said Sinarto.

Meanwhile, the province’s cultural attractions include Bajang Ratu temple in Mojokerto, Penataran temple in Blitar, Mpu Tantular museum in Sidoarjo regency, Sunan Bonang grave in Tuban regency, Cheng Ho mosque in Pasuruan and Tikus temple in Mojokerto.

East Java is also proud of its man-made attractions, namely the Jatim Park 3 theme park in Batu, Kampung Warna-Warni (colorful village) in Malang, Museum Angkut (Transportation Museum) in Batu, Taman Safari Indonesia 2 (Safari Park Indonesia 2) in Pasuruan, Pujon Kidul tourism village in Malang regency and Lamongan maritime tourism.

According to data seen by kompas.com, East Java welcomed 830,968 foreign visitors last year, surpassing its target of 630,968. Most of them came from Malaysia, Singapore, China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, India, Hong Kong, the United States, Thailand and South Korea. Meanwhile, most Indonesian visitors came from Central Java, Jakarta and Kalimantan.

Furthermore, the province aims to welcome 1 million foreign visitors this year.

“Hopefully, holidaymakers will be better informed about East Java’s tourism agenda when the 2019 tourism calendar becomes available,” said Sinarto. (mut)
