The country has also distanced itself from rumors that it had been exploring the normalization of ties with Israel.

ndonesia condemned on Thursday Israel’s eviction of a Palestinian family from their home in Jerusalem, the latest in a string of aggressions against Palestinians living in Israeli-occupied territory.

Tensions in the neighborhood of Sheikh Jarrah in east Jerusalem came to a head on Wednesday after occupying forces demolished a family home and detained at least 18 people resisting forceful eviction. A similar event had helped fuel an 11-day war between Israel and armed Palestinian factions last year.

Israeli police officers went to the home of the Salhiya family, who were first served with an eviction notice in 2017, after courts ruled the house had been built illegally.

The Salhiya family’s lawyer, Walid Abu-Tayeh, told AFP the police had “illegally” arrested 20 people during the operation and that the authorities wanted to “liquidate the [Palestinian] population” of Jerusalem.

Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki told the UN Security Council on Wednesday that Israel had “uprooted” the family, while Human Rights Watch labeled their “forcible expulsion” as “war crimes”.

Indonesia, the most populous Muslim-majority country and a staunch proponent of Palestinian statehood, said the move was “unjustifiable” under international law.

“We condemn the forced evictions of the Palestinian family from their home in the occupied territories. It is a violation of international law and human rights,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said on Thursday.
