The governments of Indonesia and the UAE have started building a cardiology hospital in Surakarta, Central Java, to increase treatment speed and combat the high heart disease death rate in the country.
ndonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) began the construction of a cardiology hospital in Surakarta, Central Java, on Monday, in response to increasing cases of heart problems in Indonesia.
Indonesian Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin and UAE Ambassador to Indonesia Abdulla Salem Obaid al-Dhaheri attended the hospital’s groundbreaking ceremony.
Budi said 650,000 people died each year due to cardiovascular problems.
“[Heart disease] is the deadliest disease. We lack the facilities to handle heart disease and strokes," said Budi in Surakarta, as quoted by kompas.com.
"If treated in less than four hours, more than 90 percent can be cured. But generally, because of the lack of facilities, [patients receive] the treatment too late. If it takes 12 hours, the recovery rate is very low."
He also highlighted the need for additional human resources to support efforts to improve cardiovascular care in the country.
“We must add more doctors. We are now ensuring that the education of specialist doctors is better and easier. That is what we want to reform now,” said Budi.
