Indonesia Decides

Officials and politicians of several countries have congratulated Indonesia after the 2024 general election, one of the world’s largest single-day elections, and expressed their wishes to work with the new government.

Among the first congratulatory messages came from the United States’ Department of State, which commended the Indonesian people for “their robust turnout” in the 2024 election.

Some 205 million Indonesians eligible to vote headed to polling stations on Wednesday to vote in the 2024 general election. Total voter turnout will only be known when the General Elections Commission (KPU) finishes the official vote count, 35 days after voting day at the latest.

“This vote was a testament to the durability and strength of the Indonesian people’s commitment to the democratic process and electoral institutions,” the department’s spokesperson Matthew Miller said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

Citing the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries, Miller added that the US looked forward to working with Indonesia’s next president, his administration and the legislative bodies on several areas, including climate change and Indo-Pacific and international stability.

“Together with Indonesia’s new administration, we will work to deliver a better future for our citizens and tackle the most pressing challenges of the 21st century,” Miller continued.
