Vice President Ma’ruf Amin bade farewell to leaders of ASEAN member states on Wednesday at the bloc’s leaders’ meeting in Vientiane, Laos, less than two weeks before the end of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s presidency.

“This is the last summit to be attended by the administration of President Joko Widodo,” Ma’ruf said in a speech at the 44th ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, as quoted in a statement issued by the vice presidential office.

“I am sending you regards from the President, who is not able to come to the summit [because of] state business,” the 81-year-old vice president said, before thanking all the state leaders for their contribution to the bloc, especially during Indonesia’s chairmanship of ASEAN last year.

Ma’ruf’s statement was welcomed by other state leaders, including Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.

“I hope President [Jokowi] can contribute to ASEAN in other capacities,” he said in the statement.

While closing the summit at noon on Wednesday, Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone commended Indonesia for its role in the development of the 10-member regional bloc, especially “in pushing for ASEAN’s relevance and promoting the bloc as the center of growth”.
