resident Prabowo Subianto arrived in the United States on Monday amid hopes for a steadier Indonesia-US relationship, as US president-elect Donald Trump’s victory looks set to present both challenges and opportunities on the international stage.
Arriving at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland with an entourage of ministers, Prabowo was set to meet with his US counterpart Joe Biden on Tuesday to “explore ways to strengthen US-Indonesian cooperation”, said a statement from the White House.
The former Army general jetted off to the US from China after having similar high-level talks with President Xi Jinping and Chinese Premier Li Qiang, among other figures.
On his two-week trip that began on Friday, Prabowo is scheduled to visit five countries in an effort to increase Indonesia’s profile on the world stage.
Apart from China and the US, the trip will include visits to Peru for the APEC summit and Brazil for the Group of 20 Summit, before ending in the United Kingdom, where Prabowo is set to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
