President Prabowo Subianto is still considering many aspects before appointing the new Indonesian ambassador to the United States, a position that has been left vacant for 1.5 years since Rosan Roeslani was recalled to fill a cabinet position.
he process of appointing an Indonesian ambassador to the United States is still underway, according to the Foreign Ministry, with many considerations being taken into account before the next steps can be officially announced.
President Prabowo Subianto has a full prerogative in appointing Indonesian envoys abroad, the ministry reaffirmed, despite hopes from the foreign policy community for the nation to appoint an envoy sooner rather than later considering the rapidly approaching second administration of US president-elect Donald Trump.
“There are a lot of processes that are currently being considered by the President,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Rolliansyah “Roy” Soemirat said when asked about the still-vacant Indonesian ambassadorial seat in Washington.
“President Prabowo’s administration will continue to place a very high priority on foreign cooperation, including the appointment of Indonesian ambassadors to other countries,” he continued.
Three months after being sworn-in as Indonesian president, Prabowo has yet to announce his picks for 13 ambassadorial positions in several important outposts, including the US, China, Russia, Malaysia, Germany and the United Nations.
Much of the spotlight has been given to the position of the Indonesian ambassador to the US. It is considered the most important embassy for Indonesia, given its geopolitical and security value, but has been left vacant in the past 1.5 years.
