Southeast Asian countries are pitching in to present an ASEAN pavilion in addition to individual booths at the 36th World Expo from April 13 to Oct. 13 in Osaka, Japan, aiming to promote trade and investment opportunities in the region as well as closer ties between member states.
rade and investment opportunities in Southeast Asia will be among the focuses of the ASEAN pavilion during this year’s World Expo in Osaka, Japan, as the bloc’s member states look to bolster neighborly ties.
First held in London in 1851 as the Great Exhibition, the World Expo is often dubbed the third biggest global event after the World Cup and the Olympic Games. It has been held every five years since 1928 and is recognized for contributing to several major landmarks including the Eiffel Tower, which was built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle in Paris.
Formally called Expo 2025 Osaka Kansai, its 36th edition is slated to open to the public on Sunday and run for six months until Oct. 13.
This year also marks the second time ASEAN is participating in the global exhibition after Expo 2020 Dubai, which was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. When the event was unveiled in 2021 in the United Arab Emirates’ trade and tourism hub, the ASEAN pavilion recorded more than 300,000 visitors.
At the Osaka expo, the bloc will be showcasing updated information on regional development and cooperation initiatives, according to Nararya Soeprapto, deputy secretary-general of ASEAN for corporate and community affairs.
“ASEAN’s involvement reflects its commitment to position the region as a key trade and investment destination,” Nararya told a press conference on Wednesday in Jakarta.
As it works to launch the ASEAN Community Vision 2045, which outlines the bloc’s strategic direction for the next two decades, Nararya expressed his hope that the ASEAN pavilion at the Osaka expos would drive greater regional integration.
