ndonesian officials and representatives of President Prabowo Subianto have arrived in Italy to attend the funeral of Pope Francis, according to the Presidential Palace.

“They departed last night [Thursday], and should have arrived in Rome by now, according to their flight schedule,” State Secretary and Presidential Spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi told reporters on Friday.

The entourage consists of former president Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, First Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Djiwandono, Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai and former transportation minister Ignasius Jonan, who also headed the Bishop’s Conference of Indonesia (KWI) special committee for the papal visit to Jakarta in 2024.

The presidential spokesperson previously said that the President could not attend the funeral on Saturday.

Prasetyo said that the Indonesian entourage brought a personal letter Prabowo wrote for the Vatican. He added that the letter did not contain any special message other than condolences from the government and the people of Indonesia and mourned the death of Pope Francis.

“We also hope to continue the spirit and messages Pope Francis has been delivering to Catholics and to humanity in general, including siding with the weak and defending the marginalized,” Prasetyo said.
