President Prabowo Subianto has declared Indonesia’s willingness to recognize Israel “immediately” and support “all guarantees” for its security once the latter accepts the State of Palestine during a speech at the United Nations, which experts find can weaken Jakarta’s long-standing stance and perceived solidarity with the Palestinian cause.
Anticipation ran high as dozens of world leaders gathered in New York, the United States, on Monday afternoon to discuss the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, against the backdrop of mounting international outrage over two-year humanitarian catastrophe engineered by Israel still unfolding in Palestinian enclave of Gaza.
During the summit, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and France, a record number of world leaders urged an end to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories. They pressed for a diplomatic solution enabling the two sides to coexist despite Tel Aviv’s continued refusal to engage in peace mediations.
Among the leaders was Prabowo, who delivered a six-minute speech to reiterate Indonesia’s position and lament the “unbearable tragedy” in Gaza, and called on countries to take a step on “the right side of history”.
Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim population and a long-standing supporter of Palestine, condemned all acts of violence against innocent civilians, Prabowo said, highlighting that the end of war in Gaza, which the UN recently named as genocide, must be the world’s utmost priority.
