SEAN and the European Union have reaffirmed their shared commitment to a rules-based international order and to multilateral cooperation as ministers gathered in Bandar Seri Begawan amid geopolitical tensions ranging from conflicts in the Middle East to the ongoing civil war in Myanmar.
Foreign ministers from the two regional blocs met in the Bruneian capital on Monday and Tuesday for the 25th ASEAN-EU Ministerial Meeting (AEMM), exchanging views on global security developments and efforts to enhance trade.
The meeting was cochaired by Brunei Second Minister of Foreign Affairs Erywan Yusof and the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas.
Kallas said the international order was being put to a series of stress tests, ranging from conflicts in the Middle East, which have triggered a global energy crisis, to the war in Ukraine that “erodes the very foundations of the United Nations Charter”.
Kallas said ASEAN and the EU should strive for a partnership with strategic vision and concrete actions.
“Because in a world defined by rising geopolitical competition, the EU and ASEAN cannot afford to drift apart. We must stand together in defense of the UN Charter, multilateralism, and the rules-based international order,” the EU foreign policy chair said during her remarks for the meeting on Tuesday.
The ASEAN and EU ministers also come out with a joint statement reiterating the blocs respective commitments to deepen relations based on international law and mutual benefit.
