T

he public’s wait for a new regulation on solar rooftops finally ended after the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry issued on Nov. 26 Regulation No. 49/2018, which will implement Presidential Regulation No. 22/2017 on strategies to accelerate the use of solar photovoltaics (PV) as part of the national campaign for renewable energy.

The presidential regulation obliges solar PV use for a minimum 30 percent of roof areas for all government buildings and a minimum 25 percent of roof areas for luxury buildings, residential buildings, apartments and housing compounds. 

However, the Indonesian Solar Rooftop Users Association deemed the strategies ineffective, which is why the new ministerial regulation is needed to address the issues. 

Many expected the new regulation would encourage residential buildings to generate their own electricity using solar rooftops to reduce the burden of state electricity company PLN in keeping up with the increasing electricity demand.
