ASEAN as partner for common prosperity

South Korea and ASEAN have maintained partnership for the past 30 years. To date, the bilateral trading volume has grown by nearly 20 times from US$8.2 billion to $159.1 billion as of 2018. The number of people traveling to South Korea from ASEAN and vice versa has risen by more than 100-fold from 100,000 to about 11 million.

G

reat news broke earlier this month: South Korea joined the project to build Indonesia’s government integrated data center. The French government used to be tasked with this project alone, but South Korea has now become a part of the project. It is understood that the Korea-Indonesia E-Government Cooperation Center in Jakarta played a decisive role.

Indonesia’s e-government market had been uncharted territory for many Korean information technology companies, which made a number of attempts to enter the market but ended up drinking the bitter cup of defeat.

Sharing the same office and exchanging knowledge and knowhow with e-government leaders in Indonesia since the opening of the center over the past four years, Koreans have built strong trust, which proved conducive to a good result.

ASEAN has also been a steadfast supporter of the Korean peace process in the international arena, including at the United Nations, and hosted two summits between North Korea and the United States, thereby contributing to lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula.

This week, all 10 ASEAN leaders gathered in Busan to attend the ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Commemorative Summit that marked the 30th anniversary of the dialogue partnership between the two parties.
