The President’s comment comes after the EU requested in January that the WTO form a panel to adjudicate the case, following failed consultations between representatives of Indonesia and the EU.
resident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has vowed to defend the country’s nickel ore export ban as the European Union escalates its challenge of the policy at the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Indonesia, formerly the world’s biggest nickel ore exporter, banned shipments of the commodity starting in January 2020 to spur industrialization in the country.
“Do not drag us to the WTO because we stopped nickel exports. We will fight in any way,” Jokowi said on Thursday at a forum hosted by Kompas newspaper.
He reiterated that the ban was meant to push mining companies to invest in and develop downstream metal industries in the country and thereby create jobs. Such companies were allowed to export semi-processed metals.
