apan is cautious toward investing in the technology sector in relation to the presence of Chinese firms amid the United States policy to restrict China access to advanced chips and related technologies.
Speaking to The Jakarta Post on Thursday, Japan’s cabinet secretary for public affairs Noriyuki Shitaka said that Japan is starting to increase sensitivity on semiconductor issues.
The country has opted to create similar restrictions on the export to China of semiconductor manufacturing devices and sensitive machinery.
“We need to be attentive to the kind of possible applications of dual use technology. It is an economic security-related issue,” Shitaka said.
American officials have called for a more skeptical stance toward Chinese technology, including attempts to reduce Beijing's influence in the rapidly expanding semiconductor industry and various other high-tech investments.
This was highlighted at the Group of Seven (G7) summit meeting in Hiroshima, Japan, in May.
