very Dec. 3, the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is celebrated to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities.
From issues surrounding visibility to accessibility, the mainstreaming of disability rights have become a main focus in recent years, especially with the continuous advancement of technology.
GoTo Group, Indonesia's largest digital ecosystem, has launched new features on the Gojek and Tokopedia applications that are friendly to color-blind individuals.
These new features complement the user experience of the GoPay app, which has been designed to adhere to international accessibility standards. By introducing these color-blind-friendly features ahead of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, GoTo Group reaffirms its commitment to providing an inclusive digital ecosystem for app users at large, as part of the company’s Three Zeros Sustainability Commitment.
Tanah Sullivan, head of sustainability at GoTo Group, said that in line with GoTo Group’s Three Zeros sustainability commitment, especially Zero Barriers, the latest features on Gojek and Tokopedia aim to assist app users with color vision deficiency in choosing display modes that best suit their needs.
“These new features adjust screen colors, creating higher contrast between text and backgrounds, enhancing readability and reducing eye strain, particularly in brightly lit environments according to AAA contrast standards, the highest accessibility standard from the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG)," Tanah explained.
Herman Widjaja, chief technology officer of GoTo Group, said creating technology that fosters inclusive progress for everyone is one of GoTo's primary goals as a digital ecosystem.
“Hence, we continuously innovate to enhance the experience for all app users, including those with special needs. The launch of color-blind-friendly features in the Gojek app, Tokopedia app and website, as well as the design of the GoPay app in accordance with international accessibility standards, is part of GoTo's commitment in action. We hope these inclusive features can assist more people and further eliminate barriers for app users," he said.
This development strengthens the GoTo Group's status as a pioneering digital inclusivity platform in Indonesia through the Gojek, Tokopedia and GoPay apps, with a high dedication to effectively serving app users regardless of their physical abilities. Apart from being available in Indonesia, the high contrast mode on the Gojek app can also be activated by app users in Vietnam and Singapore.
"The implementation of these features not only fulfills the immediate needs of color-blind app users but also sets accessibility standards within the digital industry, reinforcing our role as frontrunners in creating an inclusive digital ecosystem. We hope that more people can experience the various conveniences within the GoTo ecosystem," added Tanah.
The Gojek app provides a high-contrast mode that can be used by total color-blind individuals (monochromacy), while the Tokopedia app and website offer color-blind-friendly features for red-green and blue-yellow color-blind individuals (partial color vision deficiency).
In addition, the GoPay app is designed following WCAG contrast standards through options of bright (light mode) and dark color displays for user comfort.
The accessibility feature is available by updating the Gojek app to version 4.79.0 and the Tokopedia app to version 2.245.0 for iOS via the App Store, with Android users receiving the update at a later date.
Fardhan Ramzy, a GoTo app user and a color-blind individual, expressed his gratitude for the new color-blind-friendly features.
"As a partial color-blind individual, I greatly appreciate GoTo's efforts through the Tokopedia and Gojek apps to create features relevant to various groups, including color-blind survivors. With these features, my online transactions through Tokopedia and Gojek have become more comfortable and easy."
To activate the Contrast Mode on the Gojek app, users can click the profile button on the top right corner of the screen in the app’s homepage, then select "Accessibility". Users can adjust the contrast in the following way:
