ixty-six mining companies have expressed an interest in applying for permits related to sea sand exports, according to the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry.

The ministry, however, said no permits would be issued anytime soon, saying it required several review processes and the selection needed to be done carefully.

"This is not an easy [process], and it turns out that there is significant interest. So, we continue to verify and examine [the proposals] thoroughly to ensure that the management of sea sand exports is in accordance with the regulations," Kusdiantoro, secretary of the ministry’s Sea Management Directorate General, said.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in May last year decided to lift a ban on the export of dredged sand that had been in place for more than 20 years as stipulated in Government Regulation No. 26/2023, which also approved its use for land reclamation and private and state infrastructure development.

The decision effectively reversed over two decades of a ban that was previously introduced to protect the marine environment, which also helped preserve local livelihoods.
