T

he government has discussed collaboration with state-owned arms manufacturer PT Pindad to make equipment and machinery aimed at strengthening food security.

Deputy Agriculture Minister Sudaryono visited the company in Bandung, West Java, on Tuesday to review its farming equipment and machinery production and discuss cooperation with Pindad president director Sigit Santosa.

Sudaryono expressed his optimism that Pindad had the capacity and adequate technology to produce high-quality farming equipment.

“This is the time for us to shift from import reliance and utilize the domestic potential to support farmer productivity,” Sudaryono stated, as quoted by Tempo.co.

He further explained that domestic farm equipment production would not only support economic efficiency but also national food security by reducing reliance on imports and strengthening the position of local farmers as a pillar of the national economy.

The deputy minister added that the notion of food self-sufficiency, one of President Prabowo Subianto’s priority programs, also included access to various types of heavy equipment.

“We want PT Pindad to be able to deploy its excavator and other farming equipment to support the government’s programs. At some point during the food self-sufficiency program’s implementation, a lot of farming equipment will be needed, such as excavators, tractors, rota tanam [a plow developed by Pindad] and others,” Sudaryono was quoted as saying in the company’s press release.
