eputy Finance Minister Thomas “Tommy” Djiwandono has been lined up to become a deputy governor of Bank Indonesia (BI), raising questions about the central bank’s independence given his familial ties with President Prabowo Subianto.

Officials from the government and the House of Representatives have confirmed that Tommy, Prabowo’s nephew, is to exchange positions with BI Deputy Governor Juda Agung.

State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said on Monday that Juda had tendered his resignation and that “the process to fill the empty post has to commence, according to prevailing regulations”.

Candidates for BI Board of Governors members are proposed by the president to lawmakers, after which the House conducts a screening interview, before the nomination can be approved.

Prasetyo said the government had sent a formal letter to the legislature.

Mukhamad Misbakhun, chairman of House Commission XI, which oversees financial affairs and will conduct the interview, said an internal meeting would be held on Tuesday to schedule it for Tommy and two other candidates.
