T

he government is preparing measures to expedite the conversion of gasoline-powered motorcycles to electric ones, with a total subsidy reaching Rp 6 million (US$354) per unit.

Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia unveiled the initiative following a limited meeting with President Prabowo Subianto on Thursday, citing it as part of national energy transition efforts.

“We have 120 million gasoline-powered motorcycles, we will gradually attempt to convert them to electric motorcycles,” he said.

Bahlil pointed out that the motorcycle conversion program had been implemented over the past few years, with around 200,000 gasoline-powered bikes having been converted.

He hoped the program could be accelerated, as technological advancements could make the conversion cost more affordable.

“Now that more affordable technology is available, [the subsidy may be set at] around Rp 5 million to Rp 6 million [per unit], so it will become more affordable over time,” Bahlil added.
