tate-owned explosives manufacturer PT Dahana marked its first export of 18,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate to Australia on Saturday.
President director Hary Irmawan said the shipment represented a breakthrough for the company, particularly in penetrating Australia’s large-scale mining sector.
“This is a symbol of recognition of our national industry’s ability to meet global standards,” he said after the shipment was dispatched from the Tursina Special Terminal in Bontang, East Kalimantan, on Saturday, as quoted by Kompas.com.
Ammonium nitrate, a chemical compound derived from ammonia and nitric acid, is widely used in both fertilizers and explosives.
Commercial-grade ammonium nitrate is typically a key component in artificial fertilizers, while in the mining industry, it plays a crucial role as an oxidizing agent in blasting materials, helping regulate detonation rates and improving operational efficiency.
Hary noted that Australia was selected as the export destination due to its extensive mining activities, both open-pit and underground, which require a steady supply of ammonium nitrate to support blasting processes.
These processes are essential in enhancing productivity and efficiency in large-scale mining operations.
