The National Awakening Party (PKB), the country’s most popular Muslim-based party, rallied behind chairman Muhaimin Iskandar, who is set to receive a visit from ruling Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) executive Puan Maharani this week.
Puan, who has floated the possibility of running with leader of PKB's alliance-partner Prabowo Subianto of Gerindra Party, is expected to discuss with Muhaimin the prospect of the three parties forging an alliance together.
Puan’s planned visit to Muhaimin was postponed last week due to a conflicting schedule with her visit to Golkar Party leader.
“God willing, next week [we will visit] the PKB,” PDI-P politician Said Abdullah, who is part of a team assisting Puan during her "political safari" to visit leaders of other political parties, said last week.
Puan has kicked off a series of political talks with party leaders since last month on assignment from her mother, PDI-P matriarch Megawati Sukarnoputri, who has repeatedly reiterated that the decision to choose whom the party will nominate for the upcoming presidential race rests solely in her hands.
Prabowo-Puan pair?
Her latest visit was last Sunday at the private residence of Gerindra Party leader and presidential-nominee Prabowo Subianto, where Puan broached the possibility of forming an alliance with the nation’s second-largest party, a political maneuver that analysts say could be game changing for the 2024 election.
