The council has said it would decide its stance only after it had received a response from the government and gathered feedback from other Muslim organizations on the team's participation in the 2023 U-20 World Cup, which Indonesia is hosting.
he Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) has expressed concern over the participation of the Israeli soccer team in the FIFA U-20 World Cup that Indonesia is hosting in May.
The MUI also called on the government to explain its decision to allow the Israeli team to take part in the competition, saying the council would decide on its stance only after it had received a response.
"We want to hear from the Foreign Ministry first. The government must explain what is the Indonesian position on the participation of the Israeli team," MUI deputy chairman Marsudi Syuhud said in a statement on Monday.
Marsudi said the MUI would also hold a hearing to gather the views of other Muslim organizations in the country before deciding its stance on the participation of the Israeli soccer team in the U-20 World Cup.
Last week, the Foreign Ministry said the country would continue to support the Palestinian cause despite hosting the FIFA U-20 World Cup, in which a soccer team from Israel was slated to participate.
“Indonesia’s position on the issue of Palestine has never changed and remains consistent. Indonesia is one the few countries that has been consistent in supporting the cause of the Palestinian people,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Teuku Faizasyah told a press conference on Friday.
