Indonesia Decides

Amid the fallout from the cancellation of Indonesia’s role as host of the FIFA U-20 World Cup soccer tournament, Central Java Governor Ganjar Pranowo, who was lambasted for instigating the moves to ban Israel from the tournament, has seen his electability take a massive dip.

A survey released on Sunday by the Indonesia Survey Institute (LSI) found that only 19.8 percent of respondents would vote for Ganjar if the presidential election were held now, among 19 prospective candidates.

The survey was based on telephone interviews with around 1,220 people of voting age nationwide from March 31 to April 4, after Ganjar publicly said he opposed the Israeli team playing in Indonesia.

The latest figure is a significant 7.3 percentage point drop from a similar survey in February, when Ganjar’s electability rating stood at 27.1 percent and he commanded close to a 10 percentage point lead over runners-up Gerindra Party patron Prabowo Subianto and former Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan.

The survey also found that if the presidential election were contested by the three frontrunners, the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) politician would lose his top spot to Prabowo, who has recently been gaining support from other pro-government parties.

Ganjar’s drop in electability coincided with his decision to lend his support to calls to bar the Israeli team from playing in the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, which ultimately led to world soccer governing body FIFA stripping Indonesia of its hosting rights.
