he Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has fired a detention center employee for taking bribes and sexually harassing the wife of a detainee.
Agency spokesperson Ali Fikri said on Tuesday that the dismissal of the employee, who worked at one of the KPK’s four detention centers and is identified only by his initial M, was effective on Sept. 7.
The KPK said that M abused his power by asking the woman to have inappropriate video calls with him and stated that he failed to uphold his integrity when he took bribes of an undisclosed amount from a relative of the woman’s husband to smuggle cash and communication devices into his cell.
"The offense clearly justifies stern disciplinary action, in this case, a dismissal," Ali said.
The sexual harassment case only came to light after the woman reported it to the KPK supervisory board, which immediately launched an investigation into M. Subsequently, the investigation found indications that he also took bribes.
At a supervisory board ethics hearing in April, M was found guilty of assaulting the wife of the KPK detainee. His punishment was a pay cut, which drew criticism from anticorruption activists who said that the sanction was not severe enough to act as a deterrent.
Before M was eventually fired, he was transferred from his post at the KPK detention center to a patrolling job at the KPK building.
