If the court approves the petition, the minimum age to run for the country’s top two public offices will likely be lowered from 40 to 35 years old, a change that could be a game changer in the upcoming presidential race.
The Constitutional Court has finished its review of a petition to lower the age minimum for presidential and vice presidential candidates, Chief Justice Anwar Usman has said, suggesting that the court will deliver its verdict in the coming days.
If the court approves the petition, the minimum age to run for the country’s top two public offices will likely be lowered from 40 to 35 years old, a change that could be a game changer in the upcoming presidential race.
Speaking at an event at a university in Semarang, Central Java, on Saturday, Anwar said he would not disclose any information before the verdict was officially read out.
He did, however, cite some young people who had succeeded as leaders at young ages, including the Prophet Muhammad, who by tradition fought in battle while he was a teenager.
He also referred to Mehmed II of the Ottoman Empire:
“How old was Muhammad Alfatih when he fought the Byzantine Empire and conquered Constantinople? He was 17,” Anwar said, as quoted by kompas.com.
