The National Museum in Central Jakarta caught fire on Saturday night, causing severe damage to the building.
Police said that there were no casualties, while museum management is still assessing the damage the fire caused to its collection.
The blaze started at around 8 p.m. on Saturday night at the museum’s Building A, the ground floor of which was being used to store construction materials for an ongoing renovation project, according to various news reports.
The fire, accelerated by strong winds, made its way to the upper floors of the building, causing some parts of the roof and walls to collapse.
The Central Jakarta fire department dispatched a total of eight fire trucks to the museum. The National Police, meanwhile, sent 80 officers to help secure the scene and aid in the evacuation process.
Firefighters managed to get the blaze under control around 10 p.m.
Central Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Komarudin was quoted by Kompas.com as saying on Saturday night that there were no casualties resulting from the incident.
