Lukas had been undergoing medical treatment for kidney failure since he was arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and standing trial for bribery at the Jakarta Corruption Court.
ormer Papua governor and graft convict Lukas Enembe passed away on Tuesday while receiving treatment at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital (RSPAD) in Jakarta.
RSPAD chief Lt. Gen. Albertus Budi Sulistya confirmed Lukas’ death to the press on the same day. He was 56.
“He died at 10:45 a.m. local time,” Albertus told reporters.
Lukas had been suffering from kidney failure since he was placed under investigation and standing trial for bribery and accepting gratuities. During the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) investigation and the trial at the Jakarta Corruption Court, the former governor had undergone dialysis at the army hospital three times a week.
KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri said Lukas, as a graft convict, had undergone intensive medical treatment since October with doctors from the RSPAD, the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) and a doctor brought in from Singapore by his family.
Lukas’ lawyers said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon that his remains would be transported to Jayapura, Papua, early on Wednesday morning.
A former regent to one of Indonesia’s highest regencies of Puncak Jaya, Lukas was first elected as Papua governor in 2013. He won reelection in the 2018 gubernatorial election, in which he secured support from nine political parties, beating the John Wempi Wetipo-Hebel Melkias Suwae pair who were backed by only two parties.
