he Jakarta administration is gearing up to host public New Year’s Eve celebrations, with the main event set to take place in downtown Central Jakarta. But with an uptick in coronavirus cases in the capital, authorities are cautioning citizens to be vigilant.

Carrying the theme of “Youth Night of Global City Jakarta”, the main event will be held along the busy streets of Jl. MH Thamrin and Jl. Sudirman and feature the annual car-free night.

The highlights of the event will be dancing fountains at the National Monument (Monas), a 500-drone light show at Bundaran HI traffic circle and a parade showcasing traditional cultures and cartoon figures such as Sri Juki, Si Unyil and Si Buta dari Gua Hantu.

The event will also feature music performances at three different locations, with the main stage at Bundaran HI, and a night market.

Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency head Andhika Permata was quoted by Antara as saying that the event was to show that Jakarta is ready “to become a global city, whose strength lies in its culture”.

While the celebrations will be centered on Central Jakarta, people can also enjoy the New Year's atmosphere in other parts of the city, such as in the Betawi cultural village of Setu Babakan in South Jakarta and Old Shanghai in East Jakarta.
