Amid criticism of President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's neutrality in the 2024 presidential election, a group calling itself Petisi 100 has called for the President's impeachment before the Feb. 14 general election.
The National Awakening Party (PAN) and Golkar have pushed back against a request to impeach President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, who has been making clear his support for presidential candidate and Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto.
Golkar chief Airlangga Hartarto said there was no talk of impeaching Jokowi among political parties at the House of Representatives.
“It’s nonsense. Golkar is in the House of Representatives. And there has been [no demand] at all,” the coordinating minister for economic affairs said on Sunday during a campaign event in Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara.
The demand for Jokowi’s impeachment arose from a group calling itself Petisi 100. The group visited Coordinating Minister for Politics, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD on Jan 9 at his office in Jakarta, asking for the President’s impeachment so that the general election that will be held on Feb. 14 could be held without him.
The group also reported fraudulent practices in the campaign season.
Mahfud, who is also a vice presidential candidate, told the members of Petisi 100 at the meeting that impeachment did not fall under his jurisdiction, but with political parties at the House. He also suggested the group report to the General Elections Commission (KPU), the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) and the Election Organization Ethics Council (DKPP).
Jokowi has come under criticism in the past year for his efforts to build a coalition of political parties and a presidential ticket that could continue his legacy programs. He had been actively engaged with political parties that supported the government, including Golkar and PAN, to ensure that there would be a pair of candidates that will continue his programs after he leaves office in October.
