The General Elections Commission (KPU) is considering giving more speech time for the fifth and final round of the 2024 presidential election debates, which will cover the topics of education, health, manpower, culture, information technology as well as social welfare and inclusive policies.

The fifth debate, slated to take place on Sunday at Central Jakarta’s Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), will be the third and final time presidential candidates Anies Baswedan, Prabowo Subianto and Ganjar Pranowo go against one another before Indonesians go to the ballots to cast their vote on Feb. 14.

Thus far, each debate has run for 120 minutes and is divided into six segments, the bulk of which comprise question-and-answer sessions between presidential candidates and moderators as well as among the candidates themselves.

The KPU is contemplating doubling the time each presidential candidate is given for their closing statements from two to four minutes during the sixth segment.

Should the change come to fruition, it would mirror the four minutes each candidate has so far been given to present their campaign platforms and promises if they were elected to office during the first segment.

“There have indeed been suggestions for [each candidate] to be given four minutes, rather than two, [to give their closing statements] during the sixth segment. But, we are still discussing it at the moment,” KPU commissioner August Mellaz said following a Wednesday meeting with campaign teams and broadcasters, as quoted by Kompas.
