T

he General Elections Commission (KPU) has announced a leadership change in a bid to restore public trust ahead of the November regional elections, following the removal of Hasyim Asy’ari from the post over a sexual assault charge.

In a closed-door meeting on Thursday, the six remaining commissioners chose from among themselves commissioner Mochammad Afifuddin as their acting chairman, replacing Hasyim who the day before was found guilty of an ethics breach for sexually assaulting a female overseas poll administrator.

Addressing his new role, Afifuddin said he hoped the public would continue to support the commission in its work.

“This is not an easy task, but we must face it together,” Afifuddin said of his appointment at a press briefing at the KPU headquarters in Jakarta.

He pledged to ensure that nothing will hinder the ongoing preparations and upcoming stages of the nationwide regional elections.

“We will immediately accelerate [internal] consolidation to ensure that all stages of the November regional elections will run according to existing plans and schedules,” he said.
