T

he Stabat District Court in Langkat, North Sumatra, acquitted on Monday former Langkat regent Terbit Rencana Perangin-angin of all charges related to the fatal and illicit incarceration of people at his residence, for which prosecutors had demanded a 14-year prison sentence.

Presiding judge Andriansyah also rejected the prosecutors’ demand of Rp 2.3 billion (US$147,465) restitution for the victims and their families.

Sabri Fitriyansyah Marbun of the Langkat Prosecutor’s Office told The Jakarta Post on Monday that prosecutors would appeal the verdict.

In 2022, the Stabat District Court handed down a guilty verdict for eight other defendants, including Terbit’s son Dewa, for their role as “caretakers” and their involvement in caging people in the specially built of the iron-barred cells that resulted in the deaths of four individuals.

Dewa and three other defendants were also charged with group violence resulting in death and premeditated murder, which respectively carry maximum penalties of 12 years and 15 years in prison under the Criminal Code.

The court found the four guilty of group violence resulting in death and sentenced them to 19 months in jail.
