The country's top 'mudik' destination is gearing up to welcome around 36.6 million travelers, or 25 percent of all people expected to head back to their hometowns this year for Idul Fitri.
he Central Java administration is shifting into high gear to complete preparations as it braces for an influx of around 36 million travelers over this year’s mudik (exodus) season, many returning to their hometowns in the province to be with their families for Idul Fitri, which is expected to fall on either March 31 or April 1.
Central Java Governor Ahmad Luthfi said repairs were almost finished on both national and regional roads, with work on the latter nearing 80 percent completion.
"We aim to finish the remaining upgrades within a week," Luthfi, formerly the provincial police chief, said on Monday.
He added that he was working closely with law enforcement to implement a traffic management plan to alleviate congestion during the major holiday travel season.
This included the National Police's plan for a 350-kilometer one-way traffic scheme from Jakarta to Semarang, starting at KM 70 on the Jakarta-Cikampek Toll Road in Cikarang, West Java, and ending at KM 414 on the Batang-Semarang Toll Road in Central Java.
In Central Java, the provincial police will be implementing a one-way traffic scheme from the Kalikangkung Tollgate in Semarang to the Bawen Tollgate in Ungaran, covering a stretch of approximately 30 kilometers.
Meanwhile, Luthfi has told the Central Java Transportation Agency to anticipate congestion on toll roads and at rest areas, as the province is expecting 1.8 million vehicles to enter during the mudik season.
