T

he return flow of Idul Fitri mudik (exodus) traffic was expected to peak on Sunday, prompting authorities to implement an intercity traffic scheme as thousands returned to Jakarta from the extended holiday despite fewer mudik travelers predicted this year.

Authorities saw an increase in travelers entering the Greater Jakarta area over the weekend, following an earlier forecast made by the Transportation Ministry and the National Police Traffic Corps that the return travel of mudik would peak on Sunday.

State-owned toll road operator Jasa Marga recorded more than 146,000 vehicles entering Greater Jakarta via toll roads from Cikampek and Puncak in West Java on Saturday, a 41.9 percent increase from the usual daily figure of 102,000.

A tollgate in Bekasi saw a four-fold increase in vehicles on Saturday compared to what it usually saw outside the Idul Fitri holiday season.

On Sunday at 9.30 a.m., authorities implemented a more than 300-kilometer-long one-way traffic policy from the Kalikangkung tollgate in Semarang, Central Java, to the Cikampek main tollgate leading to Greater Jakarta to alleviate congestion from vehicles going westward.

A traveler named Sanjoyo told The Jakarta Post in Semarang that he was grateful for the policy as he “had to get to work on Monday [in Jakarta]”.

Transportation Minister Dudy Purwagandhi ensured on Friday they would manage the return travel “as best as possible, like we did during last week’s peak of mudik travel.”
