T

he government is set to double the number of Sekolah Rakyat (community schools) to 200 in President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship education program, which aims to provide free boarding schools for underprivileged children, despite mounting concerns about the program’s rushed implementation.

The President summoned several ministers to his residence in Hambalang, Bogor, West Java, on Monday afternoon to assess the program’s progress. Among those present were Social Affairs Minister Saifullah “Gus Ipul” Yusuf and Elementary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti.

“Key issues discussed during the limited meetings included school locations, curriculum design, facilities and infrastructure, as well as the student admission scheme,” said Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya in a statement.

In the initial rollout, 63 Sekolah Rakyat facilities are scheduled to open for the new academic year in July, with an additional 37 expected in September, collectively serving more than 9,700 students.

The Social Affairs Ministry recently confirmed that President Prabowo had issued a new directive to establish 100 more schools by September. This expansion would bring the total student capacity to around 20,000.

Social Affairs Ministry secretary-general Robben Rico said the directive was issued while the President was on an overseas trip last week.
