“For plots of land that have been mapped and certified, and there are no economic or development activities for two years after being certified, the government will issue a warning letter,” Nusron said in Jakarta on Sunday, as quoted by cnnindonesia.com.

He said that the warning process would be done in stages before the plots of land could be categorized as abandoned.

The process starts with an initial announcement, then the first warning letter, followed by the second and third warning letters. After that, if there is still no progress 587 days following the first letter, the land will be declared subject to land reform.

Land reform is a government policy to distribute land back to the people, especially those who lack land.

“The first step is the BPN will send a letter and [the landowner] is given three months’ opportunity. If there are no activities, we will send the first warning letter. If there is still no explanation, we will send the second warning letter,” Nusron said.
