uthorities have issued tsunami warnings across six provinces in eastern Indonesia after one of the largest earthquakes in history struck the Kamchatka Peninsula in far eastern Russia on Wednesday morning.
According to data from the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake registered a magnitude of 8.8, making it one of the 10 strongest globally since 1990 and the most powerful since Japan’s 2011 Tohoku quake, which claimed nearly 20,000 lives.
Following the disaster, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) placed 10 regions under tsunami advisory status in anticipation of any ensuing trans-oceanic tsunami. It is the lowest level in the agency’s three-tier warning system, as waves are not expected to exceed 50 centimeters in height.
The regions placed under advisory include the Talaud Islands regency in North Sulawesi, Gorontalo city in Gorontalo, North Halmahera in North Maluku, Manokwari and Sorong in West Papua, Raja Ampat in Southwest Papua, as well as Jayapura city and Biak Numfor, Supiori and Sarmi regencies in Papua.
BMKG director for earthquakes and tsunamis Daryono said that as of Wednesday afternoon, wave heights of around 20 cm were recorded in Jayapura, Sarmi and Sorong, while Halmahera and Talaud saw waves of 6 and 5 cm, respectively.
But he still urged the public to remain vigilant and away from coastal areas as the first few waves in a transoceanic tsunami were often not the largest.
“In some cases, a large wave can appear [just when we think] the tsunami is ending, and that remains a concern for us. As of now, the tsunami warning has not been lifted,” Daryono said.
