T

he Upstream Oil and Gas Regulatory Task Force (SKK Migas) has made assurances that oil and gas production in the waters of Natuna and Anambas, both regencies in Riau Islands province, remain stable and secure despite competing claims and rising tensions in the South China Sea.

Yanin Kholison, head of public relations at SKK Migas for the northern Sumatra region (Sumbagut), said all oil and gas operators were cooperating with the relevant authorities to secure their work areas.

“On maritime security, each operator has a cooperation agreement with security agencies,” Yanin told journalists on Friday in Batam.

“Sometimes there is a report of a foreign ship in those waters. The mechanism is when there is such an incident, [the operator] communicates with and requests assistance from the security agencies,” he explained.

While Yanin acknowledged the existence of competing territorial claims in the area, he said they did not directly cause production issues.

“The analogy is like, we have a house that is being rented by someone, and then there is a neighbor who claims that house is theirs,” he said.

“It is not part of the operator’s responsibility. The most important thing is that there are no significant disturbances, and assistance from our security agencies works very well.”
