Riau Islands resumes grouper exports to Hong Kong, opening market

The succesful export resumption reopened the market to Hong Kong because all fishery centers in Indonesia were affected by import suspension into the territory.

iau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad said that a Hong Kong importer had paid Rp 4 billion (US$241,211) for 7 tonnes of grouper following the resumption of fish exports to the territory after a seven-month hiatus.

He said that the shipment used a cash on delivery (COD) system, and it was paid in full by the importer in Hong Kong.

“I checked it yesterday [Thursday] and Alhamdulillah [praise to God], the shipment was paid in full,” Ansar said on Friday in Batam, Riau Islands.

“We have tasked the [provincial] maritime affairs and fisheries agency and the Batam office of the Indonesian Quarantine Agency to communicate with the central government.

“Alhamdulillah [praise to God], they were willing to take the risk and resume the exports by sending 7 tonnes of fish.”

The first batch consisted of 3.5 tonnes of tiger grouper, orange spotted grouper and cantang grouper from Sirai Island, while the other batch was from Sedanau Island, Natuna regency, and consisted of 3.5 tonnes of grouper.

He said the export resumption was a trial to see what obstacles exist during the shipment process. After several inspections, he added, everything went smoothly as expected by all stakeholders, especially fishermen in Bintan and Natuna.
