resident Prabowo Subianto has appointed his brother, tycoon Hashim Djojohadikusumo, as leader of Indonesia’s delegation to the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil, as the country misses the deadline to submit its latest climate pledge ahead of the summit.
The appointment was mentioned in a statement issued by the Forestry Ministry on Thursday, in which Minister Raja Juli Antoni told of his plan to accompany Hashim, who is also a special presidential envoy for energy and the environment, to the Brazilian town of Belém.
“In the summit, Pak Hashim will deliver a national statement that asserts Indonesia’s commitment on climate action, energy transition and its FOLU Net Sink 2030,” the minister said in a statement.
FOLU Net Sink 2030 refers to the country’s ambitious target to make the forest and land sector absorb carbon emissions equal to or greater than it produces. Indonesia aims to achieve this state by 2030, with the sector still contributing to around 40 percent of its total greenhouse gas emissions.
“Indonesia will send an important message at COP30 that tropical forest is a global asset that needs to be managed fairly and sustainably,” Minister Raja said.

This year will be the second time for Hashim to lead Indonesia’s delegation to a climate summit. He attended last year’s COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, where he conveyed the country’s commitment to enhance action to mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis, while achieving a yearly 8 percent economic growth.
