T

wo types of bacteria were found in meals distributed by the free nutritious meal program that caused mass food poisoning among students at state junior high school SMPN 1 Laguboti in Toba regency, North Sumatra.

The bacteria were identified as Bacillus cereus and Staphylococcus aureus, North Sumatra Health Agency head M Faisal Hasrimy said in a press statement on Friday.

He said that the bacteria were found meals provided by the free meals program that were consumed by the students and were examined by the Medan Food and Drugs Monitoring Agency (BBPOM).

“From the examination it was found that the bacteria content exceeded the safe threshold […],” he said.

Faisal said this was the first free meals program food poisoning case in North Sumatra and the provincial administration did not want the food poisoning case to reoccur.

“The North Sumatra provincial administration and all stakeholders will strengthen the supervision of the supply chain from [the basic] food ingredients to the time of consumption,” he said.
