he Riau Islands Police have been strengthening diplomatic relations and police cooperation with neighboring countries, especially Singapore and Malaysia, to secure border areas which are prone to trans-boundary threats.
This step is a priority because of the strategic location of Riau Islands province in the Malacca Strait.
“Trans-national synergy can increase information exchange for law approaches and enforcement activities as well as emphasizing Riau Islands Police’ role as the vanguard in border area security,” Riau Islands Police chief Insp. Gen. Asep Safrudin said in his year-end statement on Tuesday at the provincial police headquarters in Batam.
Asep highlighted the Indonesia Foreign Law Enforcement Community (IFLEC) forum, which was attended by representatives from law enforcement agencies in Australia, Canada, Singapore and the United States.
He said the forum strengthened Riau Islands’ strategic position and was a venue to increase personnel capacity through digital analysis and investigation training sessions.
On Nov. 17, Asep received an IFLEC delegation, led by Salam Zreika, at the Riau Islands Police headquarters. The meeting focused on strengthening cooperation against transnational crimes.
Asep also said that he was invited by the Singaporean Maritime Security (MARSEC) Command to receive an award appreciating the performance of Riau Islands Police officers in solving piracy cases in the Malacca Strait.
